Six Organs of Admittance - School of the Flower
(Drag City)
Ben Chasny (also of Comets on Fire) has been releasing material as Six Organs of Admittance since 1998. Most of the early stuff was 4-tracked with a revolving ensemble of friends. This is both Six Organ's first studio album and the first to be released by indie juggernaut Drag City. The band's name is a Buddhist term which describes the five senses plus the soul. Taking that into consideration its not surprising that School of the Flower's tone is overwhelmingly gentle and meditative.
The opening is a free-form barrage of acid-jazzed drums which rapidly unfurls into gorgeously minimalistic aucustic finger plucking and barely audible vocals. Much of the album follows in suit while taking the minimalistic form into different territories. "Home" intergrates a reverbed-out electric guitar caterualling in the background while the title track begins with soft finger plucking which is slowly layered with elements of freaked-out psychodellia over the course of its 13 minute running time.
Those moments are exceptions however. The overwhelming aim of School of the Flower is true to the Buddhistic namesake of Six Organs. Simply constructed, gently naturalistic songs with tender guitar and fragile vocals. The mood created is that of a quiet evening of nostalgic reflection with the lights turned low or sharing a porch with long-lost friends silently watching the stars.
